You can learn to play on any guitar
If you are buying for a child some companies make 3/4 size classical guitars.
The average adult would do well to buy a classical guitar because the strings are farther apart and the nylon strings are less painful on the finger tips.
Classical guitars use nylon strings which are much easier on the fingers and I highly recommend them for beginning students.
Steel string guitars require the musician build up callouses in order to be able to play without it being painful.
